Solution for Slow Eaters

Juan Or is a slow eater - more so for food that are not to his fancy such as rice mixed with main course dishes. For every one tea spoonful of soggy rice mixed with vege soup plus finely mashed/chewed meat and stir-fried vege, it takes him ages to finally swallow the tea spoonful of food in his mouth! Somehow the food stays in his mouth for long - don't know whether he chews the food or not or only chews occasionally, but it sure is annoying for Mommy to have wait for him to finally swallow his food and be ready for the next tea spoonful of food!

Mommy finds it really annoying because Mommy has got loads of housework waiting to be finished - clearing the mess on the dining table, storing leftover food if any, scrap and throw away solid food wastes, washing the dirty plates and utensils, washing the wok, washing the soup pot which usually has hard stains, pack away wet rubbish for Papa to dispose off the next morning, wiping oily stains on the stove if the stains are too obvious, take bath of Juan Or because he's usually very sweaty after having dinner and finally Mommy gets to take bath! Because of this, if the day is getting late, Mommy resorts to juggle both housework and feeding Juan Or at the same time.

Recently, Mommy discovered a solution to get Juan Or to eat fast! Be reminded, however, that what works for Juan Or may not work for your kid. This is the solution......

........use ladies' fingers!! ^_^

Yes, that's right! Mommy would steam three or four pieces of ladies' finger together while cooking rice. Mommy would then chew the ladies' fingers till fine (hey, sounds yucky but it's true - Mommy's mouth is the 'food blender' for Juan Or!), spit them out to mix together with his rice that has already been soaked up with vege soup, mixed with mashed/chewed meat and stir-fried vege. The chewed ladies' fingers will have sticky mucousy texture, so when mixed with his rice, the whole concoction becomes sticky and mucousy as well! For that, Juan Or eats very quickly! ^_^ Well, whether it's because Juan Or likes the sticky and mucousy texture or because the texture makes it easy for him to swallow his food, Mommy is not exactly sure but hey, ladies' fingers sure work very well to counter his slow-eating habit!

By the way, when eating his favourite French fries and Dahfa fish fillet strips, Juan Or doesn't need any 'additive' to make him eat faster! ^_^

Small Kucing, LOL, looks like from now on, I have to keep stock of ladies' fingers in my fridge at any one time. ^_^

Though that sounds abit yucky, but if it works for Juan Or then should be alright!

I read somewhere that lady finger is a brainy food. Good for brain and intestine. Now, I know why Juan Or is smart. hehe..

Lol! My husband used to chew whatever hard and big, for eg carrot or fishball into smaller pieces, then only spit them out for my girls. When I saw him doing that, he would sure get a good scolding from me. Can't he just use fork to do that? Now you also do like him. Wakakaka! You and him are member.

Eww... I find it gross, sorry, no offence. But I had a good laugh reading through the mommy-chewing process. At least it works for Juan Or to finish his meal faster :)

I have 2 kids with different eating habit. One is the same like Juan Or, but is improving lately, which is a great sign. And another one, the younger brother eats fast - he doesn't chew, only swallow. He has one disadvantage: he doesn't stop when he's full. He'll take in all and puke when reaches his limit. Nowadays I control his intake... *sigh*

Shenny's mommy, oh, that's a new piece of info for me that it's a brainy food. Long, long time ago, I read from a health section in newspaper saying that ladies' finger is rich in calcium and fibre.

Hayley, Sheoh Yan and Yvonne, LOL, I knew some of my readers will find the chewing-and-spitting out act yucky! ^_^ LOL, can't help it, in the name of speed and convenience especially for food that are fibrous and not easily mashed up, I have no choice but resort to chewing them up and spitting out like a mother bird. However, if the food is soft and easily mashed up like carrots, tomatoes and potatoes that are boiled till soft in ABC soup or fish meat, then yes, I use the fork and spoon to mash them up. This boy is very peculiar one, if his food is coursely mashed, then he will spit it out or secretly go somewhere to spit it out (if he knows I will scold), so what to do? Have to mash it finely which often the fork cannot acheive for certain kind of food. So Sheoh Yan, LOL, don't scold your husband for doing that....he has his reason for not using the fork. ^_^

Prince n princess' mum, yes, I'll use any method so as long as it acheives the result that I want. Can't be waiting forever for him to finish his food....I have a lot of work waiting to be finished! ^_^

I think all the kids are the same. My daughter also 'store' food in her mouth especially stuff she doesn't fancy eating. My trick is to get her to do homework ie colouring or writing (which I will have to participate also) and when she's engrossed in it, I quickly shuff the food into her mouth. She also won't complain of vege or what cause she's not looking when I am feeding her. If not, I will also struggle to make her finish a bowl of rice. Sometimes eat until everything also cold!

Kiasu Mom, yours even better...you get to kill two birds with one stone - get her to eat her meal and spend time doing brain activities! Thumbs up! :-D

Great you found a booster to get Juan Or to speed up. Those days my daughter would take more than hour to finish her rice. She likes to 'hold' the rice in the mouth and not chewing gotta to keep remind remind and remind her to chew.

Bananaz, *shake head* looks like young kids just love to 'store' food in their mouths. Previously I have mentally recorded the duration of time Juan Or takes to finish his bowl of rice - started feeding him at 7.30pm and finished at 10pm! Two-and-a-half hours just to finish a kiddy bowl of rice, mind you that's not the adult-sized bowl yet leh!

So lady fingers does the tricks! Good that Juan Or can eat faster.

I like my rice with mucousy texture too, I love slimy rice... used to eat rice with plenty of mayonnaise, squashy pumpkin paste and chili sauce! YUM!

Alice Phua said...

mNhL, yup, the good ole ladies' fingers! :-D

Alice Law, you are the only other person I know (besides Juan Or) who likes rice with slimy texture. A lot of people I know shun ladies' fingers because they liken it to the slimy mucous that comes from the nose, let alone rice with slimy texture.

yes, i read too that lady fingers is a brainy food... good that Juan Or is now eating much faster and taking a lot of vege and fibre every meal :-). people reacts differently to germs... this passing saliva thing... what may not harm your mum may be harmful to Juan Or. think it's time to get a blender? :-)
