There are special moments in seemingly ordinary events of my life....all recorded here.Alice Phuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13855584025388823219noreply@blogger.comBlogger431125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1804080762233858200.post-3205326327348978752012-12-12T22:27:00.001-08:002012-12-12T22:27:37.887-08:00Big Bookshop Warehouse Sale and a Meet Up with "Blog With Yan"After the Big Bad Wolf Books Sale, Mommy still had another book warehouse sale to stalk. Yes, it's the one by Big Bookshop held at Subang Avenue (last day of sale was 9th Dec 2012).

That day on 7th Dec, Mommy purposely took leave to attend the sale, do some shopping plus meeting up with Yan of "Blog with Yan" - all settled in one day! Mommy parked the car at Subang Avenue because parking is free (by the way, parking at Carrefour Subang which is in between Subang Avenue and Subang Parade is no longer free!). First Mommy did shopping at Parkson in Subang Parade (but ended up not buying anything there). Then at noon, Mommy met up with Yan at McDonalds in Subang Parade itself, together with My Little Sprouts (Mommy didn't mention My Little Sprouts in the blogpost title because we are sisters-in-law and we see each other every weekend!).

Here's our meet-up photo and boy, we had a good chat......aunty chat!

Here are the kids! (From left: Juan Or, Juan from My Little Sprouts and Yan's two princesses, April and May). Both Juan Or and Juan were on the noisy side whereas April and May were very well-behaved.

After the meet-up, Mommy headed back to Subang Avenue for the Biog Bookshop Sale. Here's what Mommy got:

The book with Tiger picture is in hard cover and selling for RM2 only! The T-bots colouring book is RM2.90 and the rest of the books (storybook, sticket and activity books) are RM3 each.

The Superman colouring book is RM4, Growing Up Royal is RM6, and the rest are RM8 each. The Green Worm book at RM8 is not very cheap, but Juan Or kept pestering for it just because there's a wriggly soft toy worm extending from it.

And finally the RM10 books. Mommy will be blogging more about the Diana's fashion and style book soon (together with Mommy's collection on William and Kate) for Willie a.k.a Reptoz's benefit. ^_^

Total amount spent was RM59.90. Price-wise, overall, of this sale is about the same as Big Bad Wolf, but of course both places offering entirely different books. However, this sale has very little people visiting it as of the time Mommy went, probably because the bulk of people had gone to Big Bad Wolf?
It's the yearly Big Bad Wolf (BBW) sale again! This time, it's at the Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre (MIECC). Juan Or and Mommy have been waiting eagerly for this sale, more so for Juan Or because Mommy has been telling him about it long time ago but not wanting to bring him along since he was still very young and quite a handful to handle. Mommy decided to bring him along this time round because Mommy needs him to help filter the choices of children's books, otherwise Mommy may end up buying 'everything'!

For entry, Mommy tagged along with My Little Sprouts because she got the preview pass. Doors are only opened at 12.30pm, but we only entered at 1.00pm to avoid the long and massive queue. Books are aplenty and placed according to genre. BBW also provides customer service as in providing boxes for you to contain your 'loot', and thereafter you can get a number card indicating the location of shelf where they store your 'loot' (so that you can continue shopping without having to lug the books around!).

Variety-wise, undeniably, there is aplenty. Price-wise, Mommy would say it depends on books - some are still quite expensive, but some is a steal. It all depends on what you are looking for and your priority. Here is Mommy's 'loot'.....

The RM3 books (cheap!), except for Thomas the Tank Engine book which is RM5 (quite expensive considering it's just a thin colouring book but since Juan Or pestered, never mind-lah!). The 'Lady and the Tramp' and Winnie the Pooh' books are in hard cover.

Here are the RM8 books, all in paperback.

Here are the RM10 books - one is a book with cut-out models to make various dinosaurs and the other two books are hard cover, thick glossy pages type of books......cheap!

The RM12 ones.....the Transformers one is a full-colour comic book requested by Juan Or (reasonably cheap only) and the other one on Madame Chiang Kai Shek in thick paperback. For the same Madame Chiang Kai Shek book, Mommy saw one labelled (probably mislabelled?) as RM15 while the rest of the same books are RM12.

This time round, Mommy found a good selection of choo-choo train books for Juan Or. All of them are in hard cover, full colour glossy pages which normally would easily cost more than RM100 per book (or even RM200) outside. The top row one are RM20 each, bottom row left is RM25 and bottom row right is RM35 (but consists of 2 books in the box set).

So, how well did Juan Or cope with Mommy's shopping for books? Well, whenever Mommy stopped to browse books, Juan Or would complain and say,"Mama, why walk-stop, walk-stop!?" Because he posed this question too many times, finally Mommy told him,"Don't make Mama regret bringing you here. If you complain some more, then next year's Big Bad Wolf, Mama will come alone, you stay in the daycare!" He kept quiet and sulked upon hearing this.

After 2 hours of walking and browsing, Mommy decided to bring Juan Or upstairs to see whether there is any bench to sit. Well, there's none but we found some Gintell vending massage chairs! We were also lucky that the particular massage chair we chose does not 'cry' throughout the entire 1 hour that we sat there. Along the way, we met Cleffairy too and chatted for a while.

So how much 'damage' did the 'loot' cost? RM166.25 after the 5% OCBC cardholder's discount. After reaching home, Mommy checked the figure again and found that apparently the cashier has forgotten to key-in the three RM3 books! So consider it as an RM9 gift from BBW! Or consider it as an RM9 advertisement fee for blogging about the sale! ^_^Alice Phuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13855584025388823219noreply@blogger.com21tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1804080762233858200.post-75458793615099776482012-07-11T19:39:00.000-07:002012-07-11T19:39:16.168-07:00The Future of Chatting is Here - WeChat! In the past, Mommy's chatting tool comes in the form of Yahoo Mesenger. Shortly after the initial 'match-making' between Papa and Mommy via Papa's mum, we went through the getting-to-know-you-better stage via Yahoo Messenger all done from the computer. That was 8 years ago. Fast forward to 6 years later, Mommy ventured into chatting via Facebook, but that's still very much done through the computer. But now, just recently, Mommy discovered WeChat! WeChat is an app used in smartphones to connect friends across various platforms. What's striking about WeChat is that it allows chat in both text and voice forms and the best part of all is that it's FREE for download with absolutely no advertisements! ^_^

The WeChat app is useable in many platforms such as Android, Windows, iPhone, iOS and Symbian. The app has got a clear interface and is user-friendly. Mommy didn't have to take too long to get comfortable in using it, considering Mommy is not that tech-savvy a person....hehehe!

What this app is in store for Mommy is that since it supports multiple language and has the group chat function, Mommy foresees this to be a good tool to stay connected with Mommy's students in the university. Imagine certain class announcements that has to go impromptu but it's not yet the lecture day? Well, this tool definitely solves the problem to make sure Mommy's students are up-to-date about what Mommy wants to convey to them. The best part of it all is that it is free to use with unlimited texting and voice messaging with photo and video exchange function!

Otherwise, for leisure, if Mommy wants to get to know more new people, there's this Shake function whereby you merely shake your phone to make new friends! See who happen to also be shaking their phones and voila! Those who respond to the shake can connect and make friends!

Does this get you interested now? Why wait!? Go check out WeChat Malaysia's Facebook page here for more tips on how you can maximize your use of this app in your social, working and even family circles! By the way, you can see photos of the recent launch of WeChat at Velvet of Zouk in June 2012 in the Facebook page. Happy chatting! ^_^
*Wink! Wink* If Juan Or sees this iconic speech bubbles, he is sure to say the bigger green one is Mommy and the smaller white one is him! His quote: "Mama speech bubble, Juan Or speech bubble" ^_^
Still hungry and eager to know whether or not there were last-day deals available, Mommy made her way to SS2 Mall alone right after the usual Sunday morning family outing.

Since it was a Sunday, there was no traffic-jam at all from Sri Petaling to SS2. Parking was totally a breeze this time because as soon as Mommy took the parking ticket, someone was reversing out from the nearest parking lot! For these two auspicious things to happen, Mommy believed today's purchase at the sale is good omen. ^_^

About good deals happening on the last day, the only good deal was buy 3, free 1 bra for Amo brand only. Too bad, Mommy already bought them on the 1st day without such deal. Anyway, Mommy didn't plan to buy some more Amo. As for Triumph brand, there was no last day deal, but there were new designs brought in which were not seen on the first day. These are halter neck tops that come together with the Maximizer bra already inserted inside and can be worn either as a camisole-of-sorts or if daring, worn on the outside to give the hot look!

These halter neck tops were sold at RM60 each and the matching panty at RM10. According to the salesgirl, the non-discounted price for the top alone was RM159! There were three designs available, so Mommy grabbed all three! Time to go sexy with Papa! ^_^

There was this bra and panty set too with the ribbon strap over the neck, and the material looks very much like the material for making swimsuits, so you can actually double it as a bikini too!

Each bra was RM40 and the panty at RM10, and available in 3 designs, but Mommy grabbed 2 sets only.

Mommy also went for Triumph brand's range of Maximizer bras with detachable straps, half cups with lacy design - the dark blue ones for RM30 each, the dark blue-brown one for RM60 and one Stretty panty for RM10. As far as Mommy knows, Triumph Maximizer bras with plain design, i.e., light brown colour without any lace sells for at least RM55 at normal price. So imagine those lacy ones - they are going to cost at least RM99 each at the very least, but usually more than RM100!

Total damage was a lot so much so Triumph gave Mommy 2 free gifts, each containing a Stretty panty! (Luckily the free gifts were still available even though it was already 2+ pm!)

*Papa had better not be reading this!* ^_^Alice Phuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13855584025388823219noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1804080762233858200.post-85049534903534243912012-06-29T21:42:00.000-07:002012-06-29T21:47:15.003-07:00"Life Support System" Revisited!"Life Support System" - yes, also known as neh neh - the life support system of infants. Yup, Mommy went for the Triumph Lingerie Warehouse Sale (26th June - 1st July 2012) at SS2 Mall on the first day of the sale, right after work.

Lately, Mommy has been becoming more fashionable and tended towards spaghetti strap tops for casual wear. Wearing spaghetti tops also mean preferably wearing strapless bras so that the bra straps don't stick out like a sore thumb! So Mommy decided to go to this sale to buy more bras that can go for strapless option.

As usual, Juan Or was very excited, not because it's to do with the "life support system", but rather because he enjoys outings!

Upon entry into the Triumph's enclosure, the security guard will seal your handbag's opening using those plastic fasteners. Each customer is provided with a transparent plastic bag to let customers throw in whatever selected lingerie.

While Mommy was busy browsing and choosing, Juan Or occupied himself by monkeying around the bra racks.

How's the price of the bras like? Well, for the Triumph bras, the lowest price found so far starts from RM25 or RM30 (can't remember!) whereas for the Amo bras (also under Triumph), the lowest price Mommy could find was RM15. Many of the bras are in a jumble and Mommy could see that the sales assistants were trying very hard to rearrange those bras only to find they got jumbled up in no time at all! As for Triumph panties, although the cardboard tags showed that the price starts from as low as RM5, however, after digging very hard, the lowest Mommy could find was the RM8 ones.

Yes, Mommy's mission to look for thick padded bra that can go strapless was a success. Here's Mommy's yield for the day - total damage was RM175.

The stripey pink bra - RM15, light purple bra with black lacy design - RM15 each, brown and grey bras - RM25 each. All the bras are Amo brand with underwire and thick padding. Only the pink and purple ones have extra padding inserts that are detachable.

The sale starts at 11am and ends at 8pm. Parking at SS2 Mall is free, but be warned however that you may find it very difficult to find back the place you parked your car (but it's easy to find a parking!). In fact, Mommy's head went on fire after searching high and low repeatedly for the level where Mommy parked the car, simply because there are no signages to indicate which floor to take to reach the desired level. Grrrrr!Alice Phuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13855584025388823219noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1804080762233858200.post-39864220733699755002012-05-31T19:00:00.000-07:002012-05-31T19:00:02.628-07:00Some Random Developmental Updates of Juan OrIt has been a long time since Mommy updated about Juan Or's development.

Previously before Juan Or started kindergarten in 2012, he refused to chew his solid food (except for white rice which he loves!), so Mommy had to 'mash and blend' everything (in Mommy's mouth!) before giving it to him. But now, he is capable of feeding and chewing himself already, except for the more fibrous veges whereby Mommy still has to process them in the mouth first.

So here's a photo of Juan Or proudly feeding himself. These photos were taken when we had lunch at Coconut Flower Restaurant (Telok Gong).

Unfortunately, the only dish Juan Or knows how to eat is the kangkung belacan. As for the other two dishes, he refused to even give a try.

Another developmental milestone for Juan Or is that he is already able to 'build his own city' by joining his Thomas and Friends' railway tracks to form a combination of junctions, underpass, bridges, etc., only thing is that he is still not able to join the tracks to form a complete circuit. So far, they are only open-ended tracks.
Now that Juan Or is no longer with the babysitter, and daycare centres don't go to the extent of sending your child for haircut, Mommy decided that Mommy will cut his hair instead. So Mommy referred to this practical blog, Almost Frugal, for the how-to.

The first time Mommy cut Juan Or's hair was on Chinese New Year Eve, January 2012, at the in-laws' house. Because Mommy was the one doing the cutting, Mommy couldn't take any photos of the process then. But here was the end result.

Here's another pose!

Fast forward to 2 months later, Juan Or needed another haircut, but Mommy just couldn't find the time to cut his hair because Mommy would normally reach home late from work and weekends mean that certain priority housework needs to be done first before our weekend outings. On top of it all, Papa always wants to start going out early for our outings to avoid road jams and confusions. All these don't leave much time for Mommy to cut Juan Or's hair. Cutting hair in the in-laws' house is also no-no for Mommy because MIL would uninvitingly add her comments here and there as Mommy does the snipping, and not to mention, Juan Or would act fretful (e.g. wants his neck to be dusted with powder again within very short intervals) whenever the grandparents are around. So what's the next best move? Ask Papa to cut Juan Or's hair instead! ^_^

Here's the process......snip, snip, snip left!

Snip, snip, snip near the ear! The only problem with cutting this boy's hair is that he kept on moving his head, such that there were occasions of nearly snipping his skin, otherwise is the snip went a little too much.
Looks like Mr. Coconut Head, right? Something like the kind of hairstyle whereby you use a halved coconut shell, put over the head and then snip away all the hair that comes out from the coconut shell! ^_^Alice Phuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13855584025388823219noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1804080762233858200.post-8177486403122822562012-05-29T19:00:00.000-07:002012-05-29T19:00:00.201-07:00Having FunChildren love lazing around with one another and Juan Or is no exception.

Here's one that Mommy caught when Juan Or was sitting at the kindy's sofa waiting for his "girlfriend' to arrive. Then one of his kindy-mate, TYK, who is a year older, came and join him. Both ended up lazing around with one another!

Anyway, they still posed for a proper photo together.
Yes, you are reading it right....a 'girlfriend' at this tender age! Every schooling day, Juan Or would insist on sitting at the sofa of the reception area and wait for his classmate 'girlfriend', TYY to arrive. Sometimes, Mommy would teasingly ask him if he wants to go into class with one Tiffany (also his classmate) or not. He shakes his head and insists that he wants to wait for TYY only!

Finally when TYY arrives, they will hold hands and walk into their classroom.
What a sweet girl!

But what baffles Mommy is after the 'morning ritual' is done, both of them go their own way - she does her things and he his things, and don't really talk to each other in class! O_o

Alice Phuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13855584025388823219noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1804080762233858200.post-52287253620086329932012-05-27T19:04:00.000-07:002012-05-27T19:48:22.396-07:00DIY "Raincoat"Brushing Juan Or's teeth has always been a get-wet affair. Why? Simply because Juan Or always refused to bend his upper body forward whenever he rinses his mouth. Then he would end up having a wet patch on the chest part of his T-shirt and sometimes even at the groin area! Otherwise, when Mommy brushes his teeth for him, he would initially bend forward, but later forgets and gradually has his body straighten up again. And there you go, the toothpaste would go drip, drip, drip!

Because Mommy was so fed up of having to change his clothes after every teeth-brushing session (which adds to having more laundry to wash too!), Mommy decided that enough is enough! Here's how.....

First, get a huge plastic bag. It doesn't matter whether the plastic bag has handles or not.

Make a curved cut at the centre end of the plastic bag (the end that is opposite to the handles). The hole created will be the neck-hole.

Cut open both sides of the plastic bag. This will serve as opening for the arms to pass through and also ease putting the "raincoat" over your child. Alternatively, you can merely cut two holes, one at each side of the plastic bag to be the arm holes, but putting the "raincoat" on will then require a bit more effort.

To give a neater look, you may trim away the handles of the plastic bag. Otherwise if your plastic bag has no handles to begin with, just ignore this step.

The "raincoat" is now ready to be worn over your child.

Of course you will find the neck hole to be loose and water may seep through during the teeth-brushing process. To fix this problem? Simple, just use a clothes peg to gather and fasten the loose neck hole, thus leaving no gap for water to seep through.

You may have noticed quite some time back that Mommy has been lying dormant from the blogging scene for quite a while. Yes, the last post was on 1st March 2012 and now it is already mid-May. Yes, it's two-going-to three months of not blogging about what's going on in Juan Or and Mommy's life. Many things have gone by in our lives that are still pending to be blogged about. Please excuse Mommy too for not spending time to visit your blogs. The past few months have been really, really demanding and stressful in Mommy's working life because of some reshuffling matters in the management of the department where Mommy is in charge of. On top of all the administrative, management and students' pastoral care duties that Mommy has to shoulder, Mommy was asked to teach a new subject. And teaching a new subject means spending a lot of time to prepare for it. Till today, the preparations are still on-going while the lectures have started already.

Here's how Mommy's work station look like everyday. So many things to do, so little time!

Indeed, since the start of 2012 till today, Mommy has been feeling tired after all in a day's work because there are always different kinds of issues waiting to be resolved for the next working day. Even after all the mummy responsibilities (e.g. bathing and feeding Juan Or dinner) are done for the night, Mommy noticed that Mommy can hardly keep awake barely 1 hour into watching TV! Because of this, Mommy needs to have her senses excited so that Mommy can sustain her wakefulness when watching TV at night. Thus, here comes the latest talk of the town.......... the LG Cinema 3D Smart TV!

This 3D TV is purported to be the next generation TV because of its smart-share features (share contents from your PC and smartphone, point, click and you are in control! No need to walk here, walk there), brighter screen (can heighten and excite Mommy's senses better after a hard day's work!), lighter and more comfortable 3D glasses (remember how Mommy complained about heavy 3D glasses when watching Adventures of Tintin?), and flexible viewing angle (so that Mommy can still view the TV comfortably while attending to Juan Or's needs!). Not just that, Nuffnang and LG are giving Nuffnangers the opportunity to party with the LG Cinema 3D Smart TV on this coming 23rd May 2012 at GSC Signature, Gardens. If given a chance to attend this party, then this is an opportunity for Mommy to party and unwind! ^_^
Grandpa, Grandma and Little Sprouts' family were there too. Nothing unusual transpired in the eating session except for this.....
Juan Or was eager to do role-reversal. Usually, it was Mommy who fed him, but now he was eager to feed Mommy.

See how he prepared the spoonful of food to be fed to Mommy.....
At first Mommy was hesitant to go despite the good recommendation because the book cabinets are going to run out of space soon and that Juan Or only seems to show interest for certain books only. But thanks to My Little Sprouts' suggestion that Mommy bring along Juan Or to choose what he likes, yes, Mommy was determined to hunt down the sale!

See the photo above? See how roomy and crowd-less the sale is? Yup, this sale is held at Subang Avenue Shopping Complex, which is just right next to Subang Jaya's Carrefour. Probably not many people are confident of this book sale (even Mommy was not confident at first!) despite seeing the advertisement in newspapers, most likely because there is no indication of which bookstore is organizing this sale, and plus the location seems unfamiliar. Another good news about this venue is that the parking at Subang Avenue itself is free and aplenty!

Juan Or had a good time though walking round and round the maze of display tables. Off and on, Mommy picked a book and asked him whether he's likes the book or not. Only those that he likes (including books of Mommy's interest) will end up in the basket. How's the pricing of the books like? Well, in Mommy's opinion, the prices very much resemble that of the recent Big Bad Wolf book sale. The books are generally priced at RM1, RM2, RM3, RM5, RM6, RM8, RM10, RM15, RM20 and RM25. In fact, certain identical series books that Mommy saw in Big Bad Wolf are priced lower in this sale such as the square-shaped Mickey Mouse Clubhouse storybook - Big Bad Wolf sold it for RM5, but here at RM2 only! Even some hard-covered children's non-fiction books about different countries in the world are sold at only RM3. Too bad, even though Mommy was keen to get them for Juan Or for his future reading, but Juan Or said he doesn't like them, so Mommy dared not take the risk. There are also Ladybird's Peter and Jane books selling for RM7, but Juan Or is also not keen on them.

Here are Juan Or and Mommy's yield, starting from the lowest priced ones. Total damage was RM65.
The Vikings book is a construction model book to which Juan Or was not interested, but Mommy bought it anyway just in case he becomes interested in it when he is older and since it is so cheap. Only the hard-covered "Wok Cookbook", "Vikings" and "William & Kate" books are Mommy's interest, the rest are Juan Or's picks.

Imagine buying a university-level textbook ("Medical Dosage Calculations") for only RM5!? Since the price is a steal (although Mommy's area is somewhat related but not Pharmacy though), Mommy decided to grab it anyway, who knows it might be useful in the future. The rest of them are Juan Or's picks - 2 books on choo-choo trains and one is a Scooby-Doo full colour comic book.
At first, Juan Or was not interested in them, but after Mommy read a few lines to him, he became interested. In Mommy's opinion, these hard-covered Dr. Seuss books at RM8 each are cheap because way back in 2007 or 2008, MPH Distributors' Warehouse Sale sold it for RM10 (but not the exact same Dr. Seuss title though).

By the way, this sale accepts credit cards with minimum purchase of RM30.Alice Phuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13855584025388823219noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1804080762233858200.post-6587696544124154822012-02-13T21:37:00.000-08:002012-02-13T21:40:15.528-08:00Penang Apartments for RentIt has always been Mommy's dream (and Papa's dream too!) that one day, out of the many Toto bets that Papa normally places on weekends, Papa's bet hits the Jackpot prize! ^_^ If this really happens, then both Papa and Mommy can afford to have super-early retirement and enjoy quality life and quality family time with Juan Or. Quality life and quality family time, for Mommy, means not having to be bound by work schedules and work stress. That means we can go for vacation anytime, anywhere, whenever and for as long as we want to!

One place Mommy has in mind to go for our not-bound-by-time vacation is Penang because Penang is the place that has it all - food adventure, sight-seeing, beach, shopping, educational visits and historical sites. We can possibly rent an apartment there for one or two months to enjoy our vacation whereby it is going to be a relaxed vacation unlike those guided tours which are very hectic. And then while staying in Penang, we can also venture to other vacation places on the northern side such as Langkawi, Alor Star, Wang Kelian and other southern Thai destinations for food adventure and shopping.

Just to have a feel of part of the dream vacation, Mommy decided to make an internet search to see whether there are apartments for rent in Penang and what the price range is like. That is how Mommy stumbled on this Malaysian property website called PropWall Penang. What is interesting about this website is that it offers various kinds of apartments or condominiums (and even houses!) ranging from the economical to the luxurious types, a choice of unfurnished, semi-furnished or fully-furnished types plus those that come with added amenities such as swimming pool, garden, gymnasium and panoramic seaview. The rental price ranges from as low as RM600 to as high as RM5000 per month for condominiums and house rental from RM1600 to RM8000. Of course if Papa wins the jackpot prize, then the rental price of a reasonably luxurious condominium of say RM3000 per month wouldn't be a problem, but if you are a working class person who wants to go for a one-whole-month vacation, then going for one advertised RM700 per month semi-furnished condominium in Sungai Ara, Penang would be a good option. That means paying only RM23.33 a day for one month to enjoy a vacation in Penang instead of paying hotel rates. Not just that, you can even bring along extended family members on vacation without extra cost on accommodation because the condominiums generally have 3 bedrooms.

Hehehe.....now let's just hope Papa hits the jackpot soon, then all this will be a reality. ^_^Alice Phuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13855584025388823219noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1804080762233858200.post-8129648656526417752012-01-18T23:19:00.000-08:002012-01-18T23:19:38.941-08:00Juan Or's First Day at KindergartenMommy knows this is already the 3rd week into school, but shy to say, now only Mommy finds the time to blog about Juan Or's first day at kindy. By the way, as usual, Mommy was really caught up with management matters during the end of the semester and dealing with countless students at the beginning of a new semester in Mommy's workplace. That's why Mommy has not been updating this blog for about one month already.

Juan Or is officially in kindy already! Here he is, ever ready and eager to go to school!

Here he is in his class called "Pre-K" for 4-year-olds. Good thing - no frets and cries from him - probably because he is mentally prepared after Mommy sent him for off and on holiday classes for the whole of 2011.

Mommy enrolled him for the kindy's daycare as well. In the daycare, the typical routine is lunch followed by nap time and then snack time at 4pm. If the child has finished his/her snack and the parent has not come yet, the teachers will guide the child with their homework (if any) until the parent comes to fetch.

According to the daycare's caretaker, Juan Or willingly ate his lunch, only thing is that he will take the spoon ans twirl and twirl and twirl the rice (instead of eating) if he is left to eat by himself. So the caretaker actually spoon fed him, otherwise he will end up 'eating forever'! ^_^ He slept well too during the nap time and ate together (ate by feeding himself) with the other kids during the snack time. In in all, Juan Or seems to be able to adapt himself well with the new environment Here he is, eating together with his daycare mates.
Overall, Mommy is very happy and relieved that he adapts himself well both in the kindy and the daycare. :-)

**********************************************************************************

18th January 2012

This is the 3rd week into his kindy. Just yesterday, Juan Or was not quite himself when Mommy fed him dinner. He seemed withdrawn and kept on rubbing his stomach. So his Papa asked whether other kid punched him or not to which he said yes. So Mommy asked Juan Or whether he punched other kid first or other kid punched him first to which Juan Or could not give a consistent answer. He also could not give a consistent answer when Mommy asked whether the teacher scolded him or scolded the other kid.

So Mommy asked his class teacher, Ms. Ida as to what transpired. According to the teacher, apparently Juan Or and one other boy played rough with each other (i.e. shoving each other roughly) and playing while the teacher was teaching. So the teacher punished both of them by ordering them to stand at the corner of the class for 3 to 4 minutes (time out punishment!) and thereafter the teacher explained to them what wrong did they do. According to the teacher, after the punishment, Juan Or became more silent in class (Feelings of guilt? Or feeling bad ?) and more mindful of things he shouldn't do in class (which is a good thing to Mommy!). Well, the fact that he couldn't hide his guiltiness at home shows that the time-out punishment has effect on him! ^_^

Sadly this time, although there is variety in the kind of Thomas and Friends toys offered, nevertheless, the kind of price cut offered is by far the worst ever Mommy encountered compared to all other previous Litt Tak warehouse sales. Previously, the warehouse sale prices offered are at least 25% discount, but usually are 30% lower than what you see in Jusco and Toys R'Us. However, the current one is only 10% to 11% cheaper than normal retail.

The only good Thomas and Friends deal this time is the Stanley set, selling for RM60 (normally retailed at RM99.90 and previous Litt Tak sale price was RM75).

Mommy saw another good deal too. It's the Power Rangers figurines, selling for only RM2! So Mommy bought two characters only just for fun, after all Juan Or isn't exactly crazy about Power Rangers.

However, when Juan Or laid his eyes on them, boy was he crazy about Power Rangers to the point of bringing the figurines with him to sleep and no forgetting, showing off the figurines to the other boy whom the babysitter is also taking care of! ^_^

Not just that, when Mommy handed the figurines to Juan Or, Mommy was surprised to hear Juan Or labelling the green one as 'man' and the blue one as 'woman', which is factually correct according to the illustration and labels on the figurines' packaging. As if saying 'man' and 'woman' is not enough, he went on to show that if 'man' and 'woman' are together, they must 'KISS!'

Huh, now Mommy knows where does Juan Or's level of knowledge/perception on man-woman sexuality stand! ^_^

So not too long ago, Juan Or spotted this shadow on the ceiling....

He said it's SPOOOOOOOKY HANDS!

Look here, look there, apparently this is the culprit.....
It's the clothes-hanger stand!

But Mommy knows where he got the idea from. It's from one of his favourite storybook called "The Berenstain Bears and the Spooky Old Tree"!
The holiday camp was for 5 days from 9.00 am to 12.30 pm, fee was RM250 for all 5 days, food provided everyday during morning break and the kids work together with the same group of friends everyday unlike the previous holiday programmes organized before this.

As usual, Mommy enrolled Juan Or for this camp as a preparation for him to go to school officially next year. This round, Juan Or showed his eagerness to go to school when Mommy was driving him there, but once we reached the school, Juan Or became clingy and insisted on Mommy sitting around with him first before entering class. Of course there were initial cryings from Juan Or when the teacher took him in, but luckily he adapted himself quickly.

Many kinds of activities were conducted during the camp such as music and movement, speech and drama, kinder cooking, kinder science, fun play,, arts and craft, water play and telematch. Mommy couldn't be there to see him do the activities, otherwise he would become very clingy and refuse to cooperate during class. ^_^ So these are the photos snapped by the teachers so that Mommy can see what he did there without having to be there!

Making snowman (and X-mas tree but Mommy has yet to snap his end product photo) .....
The week after that (but the camp was already over), when Mommy was driving him, Juan Or asked to go to school. So Mommy answered,"Soon, Juan Or. Well, yes indeed, being the bargain hunter that Mommy has always been! This aftermath sale's objective is to clear out all leftover stocks from the recently-held sale in MAEPS, Serdang. And the good news is that all books are sold each at nothing more than RM5!

This aftermath sale is held at South City Plaza and starts at 10am. Mommy had an unpleasant encounter with one rude and bossy aunty driving a big four-wheel drive when looking for parking in the mall. The parking lot is where people round their cars to look for empty parking lots and here is one rude aunty who is ever-ready to honk fiercely! Then to get out of her way, Mommy diverted slightly towards a section where there is a no-entry sign so that she can head into the correct path and speed all she wants at the parking bay. For that, the rude aunty also has to show her bossy side by giving another fierce honk at Mommy as if saying that Mommy has no right to divert the car to the no-entry direction! Bugger! This is what Mommy has to say to the rude and bossy aunty who seems to think she's all so important and grand - "If you think your time is so precious such that nobody can be in front of you, then why go for this kind of sale? Better go for book stores like MPH, Borders or Popular during their normal business hours where there's no long queue and no crowd! Some more you can afford to own a big four-wheel drive vehicle, why have to come fight with poor people to buy cheap books!?"

Putting the unpleasant parking encounter aside, there was already a long queue at the sale even at 10+am. To avoid the queue, Mommy went to Watsons first to buy something before heading back to the sale. Luckily by then, the queue had dispersed. There were really lots of people there and the walking pathways between display tables are very narrow, so it was quite difficult to walk from one display table to another. And because of the extreme crowd, Mommy only concentrated on the children's section and did not at all bother to venture to the other genres' tables. Most display tables have their books all turned haphazardly. Despite the chaos, Mommy still managed to find some decent books for Juan Or.

These books (10 books altogether) each at RM2. Eight of them are Scholastic books. Mommy is happy to have found some books on Scooby-Doo, Bearenstain Bears and Fluffy the Classroom Guinea Pig. The book at the far bottom right is a postcard book. It contains 30 pull-out postcards. Maybe Juan Or can use them next time when writing to pen-pals (that's if he wants to have pen-pals!).

Here are another 3 books, each at RM3. Two of them (Duck Soup and the one with choo-choo train picture) are hard-cover books and the Safari one is a fact-cum-sticker book.

So total price is RM29 for 13 books, but because Mommy has OCBC credit card, Mommy got extra 5% discount, so paid only RM27.55.

How about the queue? Well, the queue was HORRENDOUS! Mommy started queuing at 11.35am, but only got Mommy's turn at 12.45pm! So this sale is definitely not advisable for people who are not fit, sickly or who are in their middle and late pregnancy (depending on the pregnant mum's fitness level) at least during the 'hot period' of the sale. Imagine standing on your feet for more than an hour to get your turn and in low-oxygen condition some more! You have to be fit to survive in this sale!

How about parking fee in South City Plaza? It's only RM1 for up to 12 hours of parking - cheap!

Would Mommy ever go for another Big Bad Wolf aftermath sale in the future? Highly unlikely.Alice Phuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13855584025388823219noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1804080762233858200.post-49064160890731375202011-11-14T19:25:00.000-08:002011-11-14T19:25:35.255-08:00Cameron Highlands Apartments for Rent!

Juan Or and Little Sprout, holding hands as they walked up the hilly tea plantation at Boh's Tea Centre at Sungei Palas, Cameron Highlands.

Not too long ago, Papa, Mommy and Juan Or had organized a one-day big family trip to northern Perak to visit the beautiful cave temples. However, after further discussion with Little Sprouts' parents, we finally decided to go to Cameron Highlands instead to enjoy the mountainous view and the fresh mountain air. However, in as much as we would like to stay overnight in Cameron Highlands, we could not do so because the hotel stay (let's say minimum 3-star type) for 7 adults and 3 kids would not come cheap! The cost of hotel stay for 7 adults and 3 kids in just one night can easily come up to RM800 to RM1000!

Just yesterday, Mommy discovered this Malaysian travel website called iBilik. This website offers apartments, homestays and budget hotels for short term rental in Cameron Highlands at affordable and economical prices. The good thing about the accommodation is that they are fully furnished, can fit a variety of maximum number of people (maximum from as few as 2 people to as many as 15 people!) and most of them offer cooking facilities as well so that you can still enjoy home-cooked food (and save money!) even though far away from home. And their rental prices are very attractive too, ranging from RM180 per apartment per night for maximum 10 people to RM320 per apartment per night for maximum 15 people! But of course if you are looking for more comfortable accommodation akin to villa, this website also offers RM750 per family villa per night for maximum 4 people, which is still cheaper than actually staying in a hotel-type villa. So if you are going for vacation as a big family and staying overnight, then Mommy recommends browsing this website for good accommodation offers.

Well, had Mommy discovered this website earlier, we could have gone for overnight stay in Cameron Highlands without having to burn a big hole in the pocket!Alice Phuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13855584025388823219noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1804080762233858200.post-78859047283804750652011-11-11T21:05:00.000-08:002011-11-11T21:09:50.814-08:00What Would Puss in Boots Do?Does this feline character look familiar to you?

There you have it, it's Puss in Boots in 3D version! For those who have been following Mommy's blog for some time, you can probably guess it's another blogging contest held by Nuffnang and United International Pictures Malaysia.

In any story, there always are the bad guys causing some havoc and chaos, and then the hero (and/or heroin) comes to save the day! Imagine Mommy in the form of this cute kitty with big doleful eyes.....

....small-bodied, yet saves the day!

The question of the day: How to defeat the bad guys if Mommy takes the roles of Puss and Kitty Softpaws (Puss' female feline partner)? Here's how according to sequence:

1. Go find the Wizard of Oz and ask for his help to make money that has magical power. The magic money is only workable on the named bad guys whereas anyone else not named will not be affected by the magic money. What magical power does the money have? Anyone named during the spell-making of the magic money will be turned into mice the moment the money is touched. If Wizard of Oz is reluctant to make the magic money, never mind, Puss can give him the big, doleful eyes look. Otherwise Kitty Softpaws can give him her female feline charm! What if Wizard of Oz still resist? Never mind, go find Merlin to do the job. What if Merlin also rejects the job? Never mind, go find the local bomoh to do it - chances are, at least one of them will fall for Kitty Softpaws' feline charm! ^_^

2. Once the magic money is at hand, just scatter them on the road where the bad guys are known to be around. The bad guys are sure to come to pick the money! Tell Mommy, who doesn't need money to use? Everyone needs to use money. Even the bad guys are no exception!

3. The moment the bad guys touch the money, they turn into mice! Voila! Then Puss and Kitty Softpaws can pounce on them and have a feast of their lifetime!

Simple, eh? Just use some wit and feline charm to do the trick - nice and clean! ^_^

Oh and by the way, Juan Or is sure to be happy and thrilled to see Humpty Dumpty in action too! Humpty Dumpty is Juan Or's favourite nursery rhymes character.

It was Juan Or's infectious laughter and giggles that makes Mommy's happiest moment - something that Mommy wants to capture forever. Well, you may be wondering now what made Juan Or so happy that made Mommy so happy too. It's none other than seeing monkeys swinging around at close range in Bukit Melawati, Kuala Selangor!

Though this happiest moment was just as simple as watching the monkeys swinging around, nevertheless, this is the story behind Juan Or’s infectious laughter and giggles.

Juan Or was about 1 year 1 month old when his walking ability became somewhat established. With his walking skill getting more and more polished, so did his appetite for physical adventure. He began to explore (and imitate) jumping, skipping and whatever ‘funny’ leg movements that he saw both on the television screen and also in real life.

One ‘leg activity’ that Juan Or particularly liked most was jumping on the bed, most probably because of the springing sensation it gave. Mommy had warned him countless times before not to get too carried away with ‘the activity’ lest he falls down and hurts himself. However, the countless warnings all fell on deaf ears. Mommy even resorted to teaching him about the consequences with the nursery rhyme on monkeys jumping on the bed which sounds like this:

Five little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said

"No more monkeys jumping on the bed!"

<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">Or if you prefer to hear the nursery rhyme in the form of song and video, here is one from You Tube.

<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">

As if to mock Mommy, Juan Or would merely laugh out loud and parrot the nursery rhyme as he continued his jumping. Mommy wondered when he will ever learn. *Sigh!*

Then, one day, in the midst of feeling high from the springing sensation, sure enough, true to Mommy’s word, Juan Or tumbled down the bed. Crash, boom, bang! – he fell down just like nangka busuk (rotten jackfruit)! If falling down the bed (and landing on the hard floor) was already bad enough, nothing could be worse than having to fall onto a kiddy stool just next to the bed and getting a cut near the lips before landing on the floor!

There was blood all over his mouth, both Juan Or and Mommy went panicky but luckily Mommy managed to control the situation. Mommy carried Juan Or to the bathroom to rinse away the blood stain and then used handkerchief to press on the wound to stop the bleeding.

Many weeks went by since the bloody incident. The wound healed, but the ‘wound’ in his memory did not! Whenever Mommy read him the monkeys-jumping-on-the-bed nursery rhyme, Juan Or would cringe his face and shouted “Scared! Scared!” Whenever Mommy showed him pictures of monkeys in his kiddy books, he would give the same reaction. Poor boy! Now he seemed to associate monkeys with bad fall! *Sigh!*

Then one day, Papa took us for an outing to Bukit Melawati, Kuala Selangor. Our main reason for going there was to get up close and personal with the real monkeys, but of course knowing that Juan Or was phobic towards monkeys, Papa and Mommy kept the monkeys a secret. Instead, Mommy told Juan Or all about the tram that ferries visitors up and down the hill – the one children would prefer to call as choo-choo train! Boy was Juan Or excited to ride on the tram!

Well, we reached the part of the hill top where trams would normally stop the visitors. As expected, the monkeys came in flocks to ‘busybody’ around because the visitors had food to offer. Bold ones would openly come forward and ‘beg’ for food whereas the more timid ones would merely swing around or watch from a distance and only pick up food that were thrown to them.

What about Juan Or? Much to Mommy’s surprise, Juan Or seemed to have ‘forgotten’ about his phobia for monkeys! Was it because of watching the cute monkeys swinging live? Or was it because of the natural beauty of monkeys that can be seen so up close and personal? Whatever the ‘magical factor’ was, what was clear was that Mommy did not do anything special to break his monkey phobia and that Juan Or was obviously enjoying watching the monkeys! Maybe something in him realized that it was not the monkeys that caused the bad fall, but rather, it was recklessness and getting too carried away.

Whatever it was, Mommy was happy that the mental wound is gone for good and that Juan Or is able to enjoy the beauty of nature without associating it with his past traumatic experience. Seeing and hearing Juan Or laugh and giggle are the simple things that make Mommy’s life so happy, beautiful and rewarding. When Juan Or is HAPPY, Mommy is HAPPY too!

Papa, Juan Or and Mommy reached Midvalley pretty 'early', i.e., at about 6.10 pm because that's about the best time to look for parking since Midvalley office workers are most likely to be driving out by then. Since the show would only start from 9.30 pm, we had a lot of time to kill in Midvalley......

Juan Or got to have his static ride on his favourite Thomas the Tank Engine and the Troublesome Truck!

We went to see Transformers toys too at several toy figurine-specialized shops (Anime Tech, Comic Mart) at Megamall's top floor, but didn't buy anything as their prices are not competitive. We went to Toys R'Us to see too but there were not many varieties left.

Finally, by 8.15 pm, we headed for GSC to collect the passes. Well, there was already a long queue of Nuffnangers even though there was no sign yet of Nuffnang staff nor a Nuffnang counter. And guess who we met there? It's none other than Juan Juan and her mum from My Little Sprouts! By the way, Mommy met Isaac Tan from eXperiences too (via introduction from Juan Juan's mum).

It wasn't too long after queuing that Mommy got the passes plus two "I (heart) Nuffnang" badges. Juan Or was very eager to wear the badge and even insisted that Mommy should wear too!

By around 9.15 pm, we were allowed to be seated in the screening hall and the 3D glasses were distributed upon entering the hall. Juan Or treated the glasses more like a toy - wore it and made funny faces!

Since only two glasses were distributed (but there were three of us), Mommy made it a point to stand by with a pair of cardboard 3D glasses taken from Juan Or's 3D book of dinosaurs. Mommy wasn't exactly sure whether such cardboard 3D glasses are compatible for warching such 3D movies, but no harm trying, right? Anyway, the cardboard 3D glasses were meant for Juan Or to use whereas the proper 3D glasses were for both Papa and Mommy to use! ^_^

Finally, the show started and guess what? Juan Or refused to give Mommy back the proper 3D glasses! He insisted on using the proper one and that Mommy should use the dinosaur one! *Faint* Mommy made several futile attempts to coax him into giving Mommy the proper glasses with each attempt ending with Juan Or making faint crying sound. *Cunning boy!* So what to do? Mommy used the dinosaur one while he used the proper one! On several occasions, Mommy caught him watching with the proper glasses being lifted up to his forehead (in other words, he was watching without the glasses!), so Mommy insisted that he give it back for Mommy to use. Guess what was his reply? With an almost crying voice and pleading tone, Juan Or said," Cannot see without glasses!" *Double faint*

So at the end of the day, Mommy watched 3D Tintin without any 3D glasses for about 90% of the time, 5% with the proper glasses on and the remaining time with the dinosaur glasses on. Without any 3D glasses, the subtitles are of course double image, but the pictures are not too double image - still a manageable view, though. With the dinosaur glasses on, the subtitles still look double image, but the pictures are a little better off. And of course with the proper glasses on, the 3D-ness is very good! The only downside to Mommy about wearing the proper 3D glasses is that it adds extra weight onto the short-sighted glasses that Mommy is already wearing, thus giving a heavy and uncomfortable feeling or pressure on the nose bridge. Looks like watching 3D is definitely not for Mommy, but for Papa, the 3D experience was heavenly (he didn't seem to experience the heavy-nose-bridge symptom)!

How about the Tintin movie? Well, it was an enjoyable show despite some tug-of-war-of-glasses inconvenience with Juan Or and some brief sleepy spells due to tiredness from work plus the tensed waiting period (before the show started). Personally, Mommy felt it could have been better for the producers to have a non-3D version as well to cater to different needs of their viewers. Here's a trailer of the show:
Who is Basil? Now, don't get Mommy wrong. Basil has nothing to do with being Mommy's future fetus (or future sibling of Juan Or) nor an old flame. Basil is Mommy's favourite dog. He is probably or could have been known as 'The Late Basil" by now. But nobody knows about his whereabouts now. Nobody knows whether he is still alive or not. But one thing's for sure - Basil lives within Mommy's heart till today.

You may be wondering what happened, right? Well, it all started about 5 years ago when Mommy left home for certain reasons. Well, when Mommy left home, Mommy only had to take the bare essentials. So taking Basil along is certainly out of question because Mommy certainly could not provide well for him. So it's better that he stays on with the rest of the family. After three years of Mommy going 'missing', finally Mommy got in touch with Mommy's Mum. You know what Mum said? She said that probably Basil sensed that Mommy went 'missing', so one day, he found the opportunity to slip out when the gate was open and left home. She said probably Basil was depressed and so went to the outside world to look for Mommy. And he never came back. Mum and Dad went to search for Basil but till today, they never found him and he never return home. Probably he vowed never to return if he cannot find Mommy. That is why he could still be out there looking for Mommy or he could have been 'The Late Basil'. *tears*

This is Basil or rather, the late Basil. This photo was taken about 6 years ago when Basil was about 8 human years old (or equivalent to 56 dog years old).

In Mommy's dreams and heart, this is the adventure that could have been to make up for the lost time and Basil's undying loyalty and sacrifice:

He could have been Mommy's Superman, flying here, there and everywhere looking for Mommy without vain.

Once Basil found Mommy, we could have gone for a flying spree......to everywhere and anywhere in the wide, wide world with Mommy in his pawy clutch. Forget about air tickets! Who needs them when there's Basil the SuperDog? At most, Mommy needs to feed him well to make sure he continues to have the energy to hold Mommy and fly!

This pix was taken at Parkson of Plaza OUG, the place we went to for a MacDonald's lunch after our trip on the last day of the Big Bad Wolf Books Sale. As usual, Juan Or insisted on visiting the toy department to see his favourite Transformers toys. At the shelf, there was a section selling masks - Transformers and Captain America ones. But there is also this mask which Mommy has no knowledge of what superhero it represents, but it sure suits Juan Or's looks very much. Do you know what superhero's mask is this, anyone?
Anyway, the sword here was 'loaned' from Star Wars' toy section (do you call that the 'light saber'?).
